There are myriad reasons why organizations consider and seek flatter structures with less hierarchy. They want to decrease the expense of leaders. They want more engaged and empowered teams. 

Flattening is a process requiring several key transitions. Teams need to be trained in new governance and organizational skills. Leaders need to be trained in being facilitators rather than managers. Information and learning networks need to be built. Everyone needs a closer relationship to the market.
