In talking about virtual or in-person contexts, the learning continuum spans between engaged and passive learning. Passive learning is lecturing and memorization, no matter how entertaining it can be. Entertainment is the opposite of engagement. Engaged learning is active, curious play with structured experiences designed to bring about new and real world applicable learning.
Engaged learning takes a completely different set of competencies for design and facilitation of the learning. The difference between engaged and passive learning when it comes to passion for learning and retention of learning is enormous. In passive learning, 80% of learning is lost and 80% of learners lack passion in the process. In engaged learning, 80% of learning is retained and at least 80% of learners are passionate in the process.
