The Purpose Of Education

The debates on education span a wild range of biases and opinions. As usual, the what questions best occur in the context of why. Before we consider what education should look like, we need to consider its deep purposes.

Education would look differently in a purpose of teaching learners how to learn in a world of unprecedented world of connectivity and change than in a purpose of teaching learners a fixed body of knowledge. In the first scenario, success is how well learners can go into any situation and guide their own learning. In the other, success is how well learners memorize precisely what they're taught.

A serious adult conversation about education is one where education designers and teachers meet regularly with people from businesses and communities to ask them what kinds of employees, leaders and members they wish to see possible. Education is shaped to realize these intentions.
