I meet more people around the world who are not ambivalent about human rights. They would argue that we would have a more thriving world if human rights were more universally prevalent. They are not thinking of human rights as entitled or earned. They are thinking of human rights as freedom to engage in civic governance, education, meaningful work and community.
Achieving this will require new levels of consciousness. It took the Constitution driven patriarchal US government leaders 144 years to finally agree that women could be entrusted with the human right of voting. Zero-sum fear is always at the root of opposition to human rights: To the extent that others gain more, we will have less. People who are passionate about the growth of human rights come from the more beautiful question: How could others having more be a gift to greater mutual gain?
