Should we be trying to make workplaces more democratic?

There are several issues inherent in this question. We don't have a consistent functional definition of democracy. Most models are terribly out of date and not relevant to the world we live in today. The idea of giving people freedom of choice is largely intolerable to most managers and executives who believe in the pragmatic wisdom of command and control. Most employees are disengaged and are literally not prepared to work in an environment of freedom. Schools are still not preparing citizens for more mature versions of democracy.

This suggests that one better question is how workplaces can help grow more empowered citizens.
