The touchstone of engagement is continuous consciousness of our strengths and passions as they relate to our work. The essence of disengagement is instead primary consciousness on weaknesses and deficiencies.
The large majority of managers worldwide don't even know they're creating the very disengagement they loathe precisely by focusing daily on weaknesses and deficiencies in denial of strengths of passions. They do it because they've been taught to, based in the mechanistic principle that things only get better when weaknesses and deficiencies are detected, corrected and removed. This works in the world of lumpy objects. It works the opposite in human experience.
Real engagement only occurs to the degree that people feel confident in their strengths and inspired by their passions. This is a profoundly different conversation with profoundly different implications.
