While over 90% of executives believe innovation is key to their company's success, half actually invest in ways to make it happen. My experience has been they don't know how. This is across the board of corporations, school and hospital systems, NGOs and government organizations.
Innovation is a specialized expertise that doesn't automatically come with other expertise domains such as industry specific technical expertise, marketing, engineering, education, administrative, technology or financial expertise. Nor does it come with the power of authority, responsibility, control or position. The more organizations are free to learn and apply learning in innovation, the more executives will have smart relationships to innovation.
If they're serious about innovation, they need to make this learning possible any ways they can.
