I have this tradition on birthday eve to browse through my books from the last couple decades. Fortunately, I get to celebrate that every year there is another title, or more on years when self-discipline is less an issue.
One of the themes from the beginning has been about freedom. I know people who would argue that freedom is a larger space even than happiness, social climbing and material consumption. It is core to human dignity and the ability to live a life of meaning.
This realization is a call for more conversations about how we can create more sustainable freedom in our workplaces and schools, communities and countries. I think of sustainable freedom as freedom that not only doesn't compromise the freedom of others, but it expands the freedom of others. It is the question of how we can expand our freedom in ways that expands the freedom of others.
